The Ten Commandments of Twitter

Follow the Ten Commandments of Twitter in order to get the most out of this great social media platform.

1. Keep your tweets short

This way, you let people add their own comments and reach the 140 character limit.

2. Share images with your tweets

Images appear inline on Twitter and they increase engagement.

(Pro tip: use 2:1 ratio for best appearance on the Twitter feed).

3. Don't retweet ALL the tweets you are mentioned in

Everyone hates egoists.

4. Stop sending auto direct messages after someone follows you

Twitter is a social media for real people, not for robots.

5. Use #hashtags in your tweets

You make your tweets easy for people to find.

6. Ask questions to your followers

It's a great way to start a conversation and encourage your followers to interact with you.

7. Reply and add RT in front of the tweet, instead of retweeting

It keeps your stream branded for you.

(Pro tip: If you want all of your followers to see a reply to someone, don't put @someone in the beginning of your reply. If you do it, only people who follow you and @someone will see the reply in their feed).

8. When you have a new follower, share something from their feed

This way, you start building engagement (see No 7 for the best way to do this).

9. Don't follow hundreds of users every day!

Twitter might think you are a spam bot and suspend your account.

10. Use Twitter for listening and not shouting

Twitter is a great "listening" platform of your customers and not a billboard.
